Goblin Valley Trip

Jared and I have a bucket list of places we want to visit, and the list seems to grow faster than we can cross places off. On our way down to Vegas for Thanksgiving this year, we took a detour out to Goblin Valley for a quick trip. It was an awesome adventure and we can't wait to go back again sometime soon.

Gavin had the Monday and Tuesday before Thanksgiving off, so we originally thought we'd pull him out of school and head down the Saturday before. I turned out Gavin's Primary Program was the Sunday before Thanksgiving, and because he really didn't want to miss it, we headed out Sunday after church instead. We arrived Sunday evening at Goblin Valley and had fun exploring among all the hoodoos. It really felt like a whole different planet! We stayed late to watch the stars come out - Because it's out in the middle of no where, Goblin Valley is known for having one of the darkest night skies on earth. With just a tiny sliver of a moon and no other lights around it was awesome to see the Milky Way and all the thousands of stars.

I learned it's not always best to find the cheapest deal for sleeping arrangements. It was too cold to camp, and despite what the reviews said, we ended up in this whole-in-the-wall motel with no heat. And just to make our night more memorable, Liam started throwing up - ALL NIGHT LONG! We still took him back to Goblin Valley the next day, and he did well the first half despite not having any sleep and refusing to eat anything. But by the time we made it to Goblin's Lair Liam had crashed. Jared and I took turns hiking into the "cave" with Gavin while the other stayed with a sleeping Liam. He stayed asleep the whole hike back, and carrying his dead weight for two miles tired us out too. Lucky Liam was better the next night - instead Gavin was throwing up all night instead. At least this night we decided to drive somewhere else and actually stay in a decent hotel!

When we got to our hotel Monday night we relaxed!

Best line of the trip: "This is so much comfortable!"
From a sick Liam, sprawled out on the bed, finally eating a cracker.

Looks like geology heaven. Maybe the budding geolist will take his mentor there someday.
