Jared and I have been married now for almost four months. Within this short amount of time we have already moved twice, and will be moving once more tomorrow. Needless to say we are both ready to settle in somewhere where we'll be staying for more than two months!
After we were first married we lived down in Las Vegas where Jared interned at Halcrow Yolles, a structural engineering firm. If you haven't already heard of Project CityCenter Las Vegas, it's definitely worth looking up! (http://www.citycenter.com/) Halcrow Yolles is in charge of a third of the enginnering work for this privately funded, eight billion dollar project; the largest in US history.
Here is an artists rendition of the project, which is expected to be completed by 2010.Developed by MGM Mirage, the future CityCenter will occupy the 76 acre site located between the Bellagio and Monte Carlo. With about 18 million square feet of new construction (residential, hotel, resort, casino, etc.), CityCenter is being dubbed a "city-within-a-city".
Halcrow Yolles has been working on: Veer Towers, Mandarin Hotel, Lifestyle Hotel, The Crystals Retail Center, and Casino Avenue... Basically everything in the front part of this picture! Jared specifically has worked on/modeled a fix for a construction error on the Veer Towers where the contractor, Perini, welded non-weldable rebar for ten floor - a multimillion dollar mistake! He also modeled the parking garage foundation.
Before Jared finished with his internship, I was already up in Salt Lake to start mine, working at different Intermountain Healthcare Hospitals in the Salt Lake area. For the most part I have been alternating between LDS Hospital and the new hospital in Murray. I started in hematology at LDS, which I loved. LDS Hospital has the largest and most experienced bone marrow transplant clinic in the area, which means I got to deal with lots of interesting cases while working there. I was also able to experience three bone marrow biopsies, and only came close to fainting once!
Now I am working in transfusion at the hospital in Murray. Because the actual bench work in this area is so critical, I'm not actually working on current patients, but practicing on past patient's blood samples. Even thought I'm still a student, learning in the actual hospital/lab setting has let me get a good feel for what the work environment is like, and the different types of situations that are encountered!
In December I will be finished with my internship, and Jared will be finished with his batchelors. Originally we thought that we would be moving back to Las Vegas, but we will now be staying in Provo an extra year for Jared to do a masters. So instead of moving for a third time after only four mor months, we will be staying in the same place for a year and a half! We move to our new appartment tomorrow, but because it isn't furnished we might be spending our first few nights on the floor!
Well...the library is about to close in a few minutes, and although there are a bunch of pictures I want to post, I guess those will have to wait until next time!
